April 28: LAUNCH of Skin Like Mine, Kamloops
On Wednesday, April 28th, poet Garry Gottfriedson will launch his latest collection, Skin Like Mine—a bold and controversial book of poems with a focus on contemporary first nations society. The launch is to be held at the Chief Louis Centre on the Kamloops Indian Reserve.
In Skin Like Mine, Gottfriedson tackles many of the issues facing first nations today: from the youth, who are “afraid of themselves,” through political dysfunction within present-day band management—leaders are described as “political bullies” who “sweet-talk their way to stage management / . . . then vote for themselves”—to the rape of the natural environment by humans.
