Howard Richler, author of How Happy Became Homosexual (due out next Spring) has a great article in the Globe & Mail.
This informative article on language begins with, “You may remember a line in the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding when the character Gus Portokalos boasts to someone, ‘Say any word, and I’ll tell you how the root of that word is Greek.’”. Richler goes on to detail how the vast majority of today’s vocabulary in many languages has Greek origins. It is not surprising that many Olympic Games related words descend from Greek, including the name “Olympics”.
