May 17: Joan Harper launches He Moved a Mountain, Sechelt, BC

Joan Harper will host a launch event for our brand new release, He Moved a Mountain: The Life of Frank Calder and the Nisga’a Land Claims Accord, in Sechelt, BC. The event will be held at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre from 7 to 9pm on May 17, 2013.

The Sunshine Coast Arts Centre is located at 5714 Medusa at Trail Avenue in Sechelt.

June 8: Jean Rae Baxter Presentation “Two Nations: One King.”, ON

The presentation will be held at the Westmount Public Library, (3200 Wonderland Road South, London).

New book trailer for Submarine Outlaw

Jessica Levitt, a teacher-librarian at Southpointe Academy in Delta, BC, created a book trailer for Phillip Roy’s Submarine Outlaw. The trailer was originally posted on the Southpointe Library blog. Mrs. Levitt has previously reviewed Outlaw in India for the Deakin Children’s Literature Review.

Lisa Anne Smith will be speaking about her book Our Friend Joe: The Joe Fortes Story, co-authored with Barbara Rogers, to the Vancouver Historical Society. The event, free and open to the public, will take place on Thursday, April 25, at 7:30pm at the Museum of Vancouver. The Museum is located at 1100 Chestnut Street.

Beryl Young, author of Follow the Elephant and Charlie: A Home Child’s Life in Canada, will be speaking tomorrow, April 20, at the Calgary Young Writers Conference.

The workshop, titled “Put a ZING in your Stories,” will use a variety of games and exercises to get participants’ creativity flowing before getting them to dive into their writing.

Join author Jim McDowell at the Central Branch of the Vancouver Public Library for a talk entitled, “What Does It Mean To Live in a Post-Colonial Society? The West Coast Legacy of Father Brabant”.

The presentation will feature readings and discussion from Jim’s latest book, Father August Brabant: Saviour or Scourge?.

Jim McDowell will explore the life of Father August Brabant. Brabant was the first Roman Catholic missionary to live and work among aboriginal people on the west coast of Vancouver Island during the colonial period. His thirty-three-year long career as an active agent of acculturation will be used as a provocative case study of the dynamics that shaped, and continue to define, the settler-colonial relationship between indigenous peoples and the state in Canada.

This a free event takes place on Thursday, May 2 at 7pm in the Alma VanDusen Room, Lower Level of the Central Branch of the Vancouver Public Library (350 West Georgia Street).

Join author Jan Drabek at the Central Branch of the Vancouver Public Library for a talk entitled, “From WWII Resistance Fighter to BC Forest Conservationist”.

The presentation will feature readings and discussion from Jan’s latest book, Vladimir Krajina: World War II Hero and Ecology Pioneer.

Join Jan Drabek as he relates Vladimir Krajina’s two extraordinary careers: first as a Resistance leader fighting the Nazis in Czechoslovakia; and second, after his immigration to Vancouver, when he fought the forest barons and created Canada’s Ecological Reserves. Jan’s presentation will be accompanied by numerous photos.
