The West Coast Legacy of Father Brabant”.

<img src="http://ronsdalepress.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/BrabantCover.jpg" alt="" title="Father August Brabant" width="140" height="214" size-full wp-image-9173" />

The presentation will feature readings and discussion from Jim’s latest book, Father August Brabant: Saviour or Scourge?.

Jim McDowell will explore the life of Father August Brabant. Brabant was the first Roman Catholic missionary to live and work among aboriginal people on the west coast of Vancouver Island during the colonial period. His thirty-three-year long career as an active agent of acculturation will be used as a provocative case study of the dynamics that shaped, and continue to define, the settler-colonial relationship between indigenous peoples and the state in Canada.

This a free event takes place on Thursday, May 2 at 7pm in the Alma VanDusen Room, Lower Level of the Central Branch of the Vancouver Public Library (350 West Georgia Street).
