League of Canadian Poets
Each year the League of Canadian Poets sponsors the National Poetry Competition and the Youth Poetry Competition. Both have as their aims the encouragement of poetic talent.
The National Poetry Competition has been an annual event ever since its beginning in 1986 and is now one of Canada’s most prestigious writing competitions, offering all Canadians a chance to discover their writing abilities. Six well known poets are selected by the League’s National Council to judge the contest. Each year the 50 winning poems are gathered into a poetry anthology, Vintage.
The Canadian Youth Poetry Competition comprises two categories: the junior division for students in grades 7 to 9, and the senior division for grades 10 to 12. The judges are established poets who choose the top three poems in each category. These poems are also included in Vintage.
